Barend joined NLO in 2016. Between 2008 and 2016, he worked for a medium-sized patent office. Here he represented clients applying for patents in a range of sectors, including lithography equipment, plastic pipes and the toy industry. He also advises clients on the patentability of inventions and on how to work around existing patents.



Barend specialises in preparing and defending patents for machines and software. He has experience with patent application procedures worldwide, including in South Korea, Japan, Singapore, China and Taiwan.



Barend graduated from the University of Groningen with a Master in Computer Science, specialising in image processing and recognition. He was also involved in programming an expert system for estate settlement for the Legal and ICT department at the University of Groningen.

Barend is a member of the Institute of Professional Representatives Before the European Patent Office (EPI) and the Netherlands Institute of Patent Attorneys.
