Satoru has a background in physics, astrophysics and mathematics. This includes optics, electromagnetism, general relativity and gravitation, pulsar astrophysics, cosmology, probability and statistics. He also has experience in scientific computing, including large scale numerical models, data analysis and image reconstruction algorithms.
Satoru graduated with a Master's degree with honours in Astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh. He then obtained a postgraduate degree in Astronomy at the University of Manchester, working in the field of observational radio astronomy at Jodrell Bank Observatory, UK. He followed this with a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Glasgow, where his research involved identifying the geometrical and gravitational effects of stars on pulsar timing through large scale computer simulations. His postdoctoral research with the Electromagnetics group of the department of Electrical Engineering, at the Technical University of Eindhoven, focused on Maxwell solver algorithms for objects in stratified media.
