Ruurd joined NLO in 1986 after a professional career as a researcher in organic chemistry and photochemistry.
Ruurd specialises in organic chemistry, pharmacy, biochemistry and food. He acts as a consultant for several large and medium-sized food companies as well as environmental, energy and health technology institutes. Ruurd has extensive experience in prosecutions and oppositions at the European Patent Office and has been involved in various litigations relating to pharmaceuticals (e.g. atorvastatine, ciclosporine, oxycodone) and infant nutrition.
Ruurd has an MSc in Organic Chemistry (University of Amsterdam, 1972) and a PhD in Physical-organic Chemistry (Amsterdam, 1979).
Ruurd is an elected member of the Council of the European Patent Institute (EPI), a member of Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle (AIPPI), the Dutch Group of the International Association AIPPI and the Fédération Internationale des conseils en propriété Industrielle (FICPI).
