Bart Swinkels Headshot

Bart Swinkels

Dutch and European patent attorney & Of Counsel
As a Dutch and European patent attorney and former partner at NLO I bring more than 30 years of experience in patenting in the life sciences area to the table. And after all that time I am still passionate about finding creative solutions in complex IP situations to help my clients to bring their innovative products to market, with robust protection and free of competitor patents. My areas of expertise include genomics, genome editing, gene therapy, (onco)immunology (engagers, antibodies and vaccines), metabolic engineering, microbiology and breeding of plants or animals. Over the years I have gained extensive experience in handling adversarial proceedings, both before the national courts, as well as in European opposition proceedings up to the Boards of Appeal.

Prior to joining NLO I headed the IP department of Pharming N.V. and I was a patent attorney at DSM. Before entering the world of IP, I did molecular biological research in both academic and industrial settings at DSM, UC San Diego and the Netherlands Cancer Institute. In addition, I represented the Netherlands in the Biotech Committee of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the EPO (EPI).

Bart is among the “IAM Patent 1000 –World's Leading Patent Practitioners” every year since 2012 and among the MIP “IP Stars” every years since 2014.
