Mark Willis

Trainee patent attorney
After having worked in several patent firms in the UK, I Joined NLO in April 2021 as a trainee patent attorney. Moving to NLO was the logical choice as I wanted to specialise in food chemistry and NLO has an excellent reputation in this field within Europe. I not only have a strong background in organic chemistry, but experience working with SMEs and large companies. Currently, I am working on the patent portfolios of several large multinational food companies.

Expertise

  • Chemistry
  • Pharma
  • Medical Technology
  • Food

I am a part-qualified UK and European patent attorney. I have experience in patent drafting, prosecution and opposition as well as providing validity opinions and freedom-to-operate analysis.

I studied chemistry at the University of Manchester (UK), where I specialised in advanced organic and inorganic chemistry. After graduating, I obtained a PhD in organic synthesis, also from the University of Manchester. My research involved developing synthetic approaches to the synthesis of the macrocycle chaetochalasin A. This research has given me a strong analytical approach to my work, which helps me quickly get to grips with a client’s invention.

Outside the office, I enjoy cycling and Aikido.
