Daan Wijnnobel talks about his job

After my master in ICT & Law, specialization IP, I started looking around for job opportunities. I heard about NLO Shieldmark (then still Nederlandsch Octrooibureau) from a friend of a friend. I was invited to come by for an informal interview and before I knew it, everyone was enthusiastic and I could begin immediately.

I really enjoy what I do. I’ve worked in various teams and learned a lot and seen many different things from all of them. We can work hard together, but sometimes there’s time to relax. Some of us go and play a game of Fifa on the PlayStation in our Nintendo meeting room.

You will deal with legal issues on a daily basis. It’s just that the legal perspective differs from that with legal prosecution. You use legal knowledge to provide commercial advice. It is important to put yourself in the client’s shoes. The client has a certain vision for their product or service, but they don’t usually know much about the legal side. What I enjoy is ensuring the client that they can do their core business and leave all the legal stuff to me. A client then starts to trust you and is confident that things will turn out well.

I’ve built up a mature portfolio and I can now operate at the highest level.

The BMM training is very good for getting to know other people in the field. In terms of subject matter, it’s also good to learn about certain specific aspects. These are things which you encounter on a day-to-day basis: how to provide advice, how to tackle certain issues. This is really a must for an attorney. What’s more, the training is easy to combine with your work. If you have any questions, you can always ask someone. The organisation is very flat, so you can go to anyone and they will always be prepared to help you.
