Each year on 28 February, global attention is focused on the many rare diseases that still lack effective treatments. One promising solution is drug repurposing - finding a new application for an existing and available medicine. This approach can speed up the access to a new treatment and, in many cases, can provide a first-time therapy for a small patient group. To turn this potential into reality, increased investment in repurposed drugs in general and in particular for rare diseases is essential. Patent protection for such new application of an existing medicine plays a crucial role, helping to create a viable and sustainable development pathway.
