Stijn joined NLO in 2014. Previous to this, he was a researcher at a new pharmaceutical company which develops protease inhibitors. He also spent several years working as a postdoctoral researcher, among others at the École Normale Supérieure and the Institut Curie in Paris. This resulted in various publications in leading journals.
Stijn has a scientific background in many areas of biotechnology, including protein engineering, cell-based assays, enzymology, bioconjugation, transfection and signal peptides. He is also experienced in the connections with the fields of chemistry, materials science and nanotechnology.
Stijn studied molecular life sciences (2001-2006) and completed his studies cum laude at the ETH in Zurich. In Nijmegen, he completed his PhD research in organic chemistry under the supervision of Professors Nolte and Van Hest (2006-2010). His research focused on self-organised nanoreactors which produce enzymatic cascade reactions and their integration in living cells.
