Emily Flood

Trainee patent attorney
My education focused on arts and sciences, which helped me develop a passion for chemistry. During my academic career, I gained specialised knowledge in the field of biomarker analysis and analytical chemistry. In 2021, I joined NLO as a trainee patent attorney on Wannes Weymiens’ team, which focuses on innovations in the chemistry field. I plan to use my multidisciplinary training as well as my ability to focus on details to help clients achieve the best protection for their inventions.

Expertise

  • Chemistry
  • Pharma
  • Food

After obtaining my PhD in organic biomarker-based climate reconstruction, I further developed my biomarker extraction and analysis skills during a geologically-oriented postdoc. I then decided on a change in career direction but wanted to stay in touch with the latest scientific innovations. The intellectual property field seemed the perfect choice. I am thrilled to be embarking on my patent attorney career at NLO.

My ability to shift easily between research fields allows me to quickly grasp new ideas and get to the crux of an issue. Furthermore, my experience living in several countries has given me a unique appreciation of different ways of achieving goals and understanding clients’ needs.
