"How do I protect a trademark?"

In this rubric, the basics regarding Intellectual Property will be explained. #YouAskWeAnswer. We will now shift our focus from patents to trademarks.

To protect a trademark, it has to be registered in the official trademark register. You may request trademark registration in any country. But you can also obtain the same trademark right in different countries by filing one application.

Here are some possibilities:

  • The Benelux countries
  • The European Union, where registration offers protection in all member states (the EU Trademark)
  • A so-called international registration based on the Madrid Agreement

The latter will help you protect your trademark in most European countries and also in many non-European countries such as Japan, the United States and China.

The best registration option for you and your trademark also depends on the countries in which you operate. After consultation with you, our advisors will draft and file your application and monitor the further procedure.
