Deelan Chan

Trainee patent attorney
I started as a Trainee Patent Attorney in the Chemistry team at NLO in 2026. I am passionate about protecting scientific inventions from a legal perspective, understanding that the patentability of inventions oftentimes determines whether scientific projects are progressed, redirected, or shelved. My scientific training covers industrial polymer chemistry, materials science and catalysis, chemical engineering, and sustainable chemistry, built from experience across both academia and industry. These experiences allow me to approach inventions holistically and bring a fresh perspective to scientific novelty.

Profile

My academic journey in chemistry started at the University of Warwick, where I pursued an integrated master’s degree in chemistry. During this time, I focused on multiple disciplines spanning organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. As part of my industrial placement, I spent one year in the Netherlands at a large materials science company working on the development of biodegradable polymer alternatives to commercial products. I also spent six months at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore on an international placement developing perovskite-based catalysts. During my master’s project, I worked on the development of sustainable polymers through anionic polymerisation, creating a novel replacement for certain harmful chemicals found in personal care products.

Following graduation, I returned to the materials science company, where I developed sustainable polymers for agricultural solutions. During this time, I was fortunate enough to lead projects and learn about the development phases required to bring a project from feasibility to launch. This experience gave me insight into the IP processes needed for projects to succeed in industry. Through my time in industry, I also developed skills in internal and external stakeholder management, client and customer relationships, experimental design, and analytical problem solving.

With these skillsets, I hope to provide strategic guidance and services to deliver client‑centric solutions.
